Every year, 21st of February, Irushadhiyya along with people all around the world celebrates International Mother Language day.
The 2018 theme for the day is “Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development”. Survey done by UNESCO shows that a language disappears on average of every two-week time and with it an entire culture and heritage is taken from the world.
Today, a special assembly was held in the school to acknowledge the day. Teachers of Irushadhiyya greeted the crowd in the most common spoken languages in the world.
Mr. Ahmed Shareef, a popular writer, orator, Dhivehi Language Teacher of Addu City, joined as a Guest Speaker to address the gathering. In his speech, he shared his experiences and talked about the importance of saving our mother language. He also stressed the need for learning and using of our local dialect in our daily communication.
Students spoke about the importance of mother languages and advised one and all to preserve it. They also shared quotes and saying from famous people regarding saving languages.
The function came to an end with a joint debate organized by English and Dhivehi department on the topic “should there be only one language in the world”. The winner of the debate was the students and staff who spoke against the topic!
